Month-long Events
1) Corn Maze (Manistee), starts September 18th, continues through Oct. 31, 11am-5pm at Douglas Valley Winery (5375 Douglas Valley Dr., off Schoedel Rd.). Outdoors, weather permitting. $3/person, kids 4 and under free with adult supervision. (231) 887-3333
2) Kaleva's Parade of Scarecrows (Kaleva), Oct. 1-31. Look out--did that scarecrow just move? A festive display welcomes you into town.
3) Onekama Scarecrows (Onekama), Oct. 1-31. Over 60 wonderful scarecrows greet you along M-22 and the color tour route. Presented by the Portage Lake Association.
4) Apple Valley Orchards (Bear Lake), Oct. 1-31, 8am-6pm. 11240 Milarch Rd. Come visit a working farm and witness nature’s bounty. Browse 18 varieties of apples (including Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Gala, McIntosh & Courtland) plus winter squash, pumpkins and gourds. Pick out a free apple for yourself! Farm tours available. 5) Scary Story Contest (Manistee County), Oct. 1-31. 3rd graders and up are invited to submit an original scary story. Only the creepiest and most creative will make it into the 2016 Terrifying Tales booklet. (231) 723- 2519

6) Bottle House Museum (Kaleva), Saturdays in October, 12-4pm. 14551 Wuoksi St. The ghosts of early Kaleva families welcome you to see the Makinen Tackle Room, displays about notable citizens and much more. Photographs and artifacts tell their intriguing stories. (231) 362-2080 7) Hayrides & Wine in The Vines (Manistee), Saturdays & Sundays in October at Douglas Valley Winery (5375 Douglas Valley Dr., off Schoedel Rd.). At 12 noon, 1pm & 2pm, hayrides for the family ($3/person). At 3:30pm, an educational wine tasting and tour through the orchards and vineyard. Wine and light snacks included with admission. 8) Marilla Museum Open Hours (Marilla), Saturdays in October, 1-5pm at Marilla Museum & Pioneer Place (9991 Marilla Rd). Experience pioneer life with a visit to the 1870s log home, 1900 barn, full-size replica hunter-trapper logger’s cabin and museum space. All museum spaces open for tours! (231) 362-3430
9) Macabre Manistee Movies (Manistee), Vogue Theatre (383 River St.). 10) Cemetery Walk (Manistee), Oct. 1, 2, 8 & 9, 4pm at Oak Grove Cemetery (1040 Veterans Oak Grove Dr.). Learn about Manistee County's rich history and the people who contributed to it. Walking tour lasts about one hour. $2. Proceeds go to Manistee Historical Museum and Oak Grove Cemetery. (231) 690-1570

12) Little Manistee River Weir Tour (Stronach) Oct. 4, 5 & 6, 9am-1pm group tours on the hour, drop-in visitors between groups, when possible. Dates & times may vary, based on fish activity, calling ahead strongly recommended. East end of Old Stronach Rd. at North Little Manistee River Rd. 13) Manistee’s Ghost Ship (Manistee), Starts on Fri. Oct. 7, continues Fridays & Saturdays in October, 7:30-10:30pm at the S.S. City of Milwaukee (99 Arthur St., directly off US-31). The Ghost Ship is back and scarier than ever! $10 adults, $8 children 7-17 and seniors 60+. Bring non-perishable food item any evening, get $1 off admission. (231) 723-3587
14) Onekama Fall Festival (Onekama), Sat. Oct. 8, 10am-4pm at Onekama Village Park (Main St., on M-22). Craft and food vendors, inflatable castle, wagon, pony and miniature train rides, face painting, Mr. Balloon Man and more! In case of rain, event will be held inside Onekama School. Free. 15) Autumn Glory Day (Bear Lake), Sat. Oct. 8. 11am-3pm, rain or shine! Lions Club Den (downtown, directly off US-31). 16) Fall Fish Boil (Marilla), Sat. Oct. 8, 5-7pm at Marilla Museum & Pioneer Place (9991 Marilla Rd). Join us inside the adjoining Marilla Township Hall for our festive fish boil--a local favorite! All museum spaces will be open for extended hours during this event (see Event #8 for Marilla Museum description). A fundraiser for the Marilla Historical Society. Donations accepted. (231) 362-3430
17) Big Bear Sportsman's Fall Banquet (Onekama), Sat. Oct. 8. Doors open 5:30pm at County Fairgrounds (7587 1st St.). Hors d'ouevres, with smoked salmon dip, veggies and summer sausage. Main course at 7pm with bear, venison, beaver and salmon. Chicken & ham options for those preferring tamer fare. Drawings and door prizes, too. $30 per person. 19) Jeremy Kittel Trio (Manistee), Sun. Oct. 9, 3pm. Ramsdell Theatre (101 Maple St.). Award-winning fiddler, violinist, and composer Jeremy Kittel, accompanied by dynamic musicians Josh Pinkham and Quinn Bachand, bring their progressive acoustic music to the Ramsdell. $20 in advance, $25 at the door. 23) The Haunted Library (Manistee), Thurs. Oct. 20, 6:30-7:30pm. Manistee County Library (95 Maple St.) The top floor of the library will be transformed into a haunted house. 24) Leaving Iowa (Manistee), Oct. 21, 22, 28, 29 (7:30pm) plus Oct. 23 & 30 (2pm). Ramsdell Theatre (101 Maple St.). Don Browning's on a pilgrimage to find a proper resting place for his father's ashes. When Plan A falls through, memories materialize during his road trip. 26) Pumpkin Run & Haunted Trail Ride (Copemish), Twisted Trails Off Road Park (19405 Read Rd.) Join us for the weekend with our annual Pumpkin Run on Sat. Oct. 22, starting at 9am. We have miles of terrain for all your off-road fun, bring your own ATVs, dirt bikes and 4x4 off-road vehicles for tons of fun. Day pass $15, weekend pass $30. Haunted Trail Ride begins Sat. 27) Mozart's Don Giovanni (Manistee), Sat. Oct. 22, 12:55pm. Ramsdell Theatre (101 Maple St.). The Metropolitan Opera comes to the Ramsdell screen, live in HD! Simon Keenlyside stars as the famous seducer who inspires jealousy and rage, in a story that features secret identities and enchanted statues. 28) Boos, Brews & Brats (Manistee), Sat. Oct. 29, Downtown Manistee (River St.). Kids' film at 10am: Hotel Transylvania 2 at the Vogue Theatre (25 cents admission). Kids' parade at 2pm with trick or treating outside, along on the River St. sidewalk. During the evening, the Monster Bash at corner of Maple & River Sts., featuring live music by local favorite Clear Heels. (231) 510-8147
29) Haunted Store (Kaleva), Mon. Oct. 31, 5-8pm at Kaleva Meats (14468 Wuoksi Ave.). The aisles get eerie at 5pm, when the market welcomes children for trick or treating. 31) Filer Charter Township Halloween Parade (Filer Township), Mon. Oct. 31, 5pm. 23rd & Nelson Sts. See ghouls, critters and costumed characters in this annual event! Parade starts on 23rd St., runs south on Nelson St. to the fire station. Candy and treats after the parade. Arrive by 4:30pm at 23rd St. to participate - all are welcome!
