Month-long Events

1) Arcadia Scarecrows (Arcadia), Oct. 1-31. M-22 & Lake St. The annual convention of Arcadia scarecrows, honoring those out standing in their fields. Presented by the Arcadia Garden Club.

2) Scarecrow Harvest (Bear Lake), Oct. 1-31. Come visit Bear Lake and see a creative collection of scarecrows displayed throughout town!

3) Onekama Scarecrows (Onekama), Oct. 1-31. Over 60 wonderful scarecrows greet you along M-22 and the color tour route. Presented by the Portage Lake Association.

4) Apple Valley Orchards (Bear Lake), Oct. 1-31. 11240 Milarch Rd. Come visit a working farm and witness nature’s bounty. Browse a wide selection of apples (including Honeycrisp, Gala and McIntosh varieties). Pick out a

5) Scary Story Contest (Manistee County), Oct. 1-31. Write and submit an original story for a chance to be included in the 2013 Terrifying Tales booklet (3rd graders and up). Turn in at any Manistee County Library (MCL) branch during October. Entries become the property of MCL. Winners announced in November! (231) 723-2519

6) Home Decorating Contest (Manistee County), Oct. 1-31. Macabre Manistee County and the Three Pines Gander are awarding prizes for the best decorated homes! Download entry forms and details at MacabreManisteeCounty.org.

Single-day or Multi-day Events

7) Manistee’s Ghost Ship (Manistee), Fridays & Saturdays in October, 7:30-10:30pm at the S.S. City of Milwaukee (99 Arthur St., directly off US-31). The Ghost Ship is back and scarier than ever! $8 adults, $6 children under
17 and seniors 60+. Bring non-perishable food item Oct. 11 or 12, get $1 off admission. (231) 723-3587

8) Douglas Valley Harvest Days (Manistee), Saturdays (11-6pm) & Sundays (12-5pm) in October. (5375 Douglas Valley Dr., off Schoedel Rd.). Hayrides, cider and donuts, pumpkin patch and u-pick apples. (231) 887-3333

9) Bottle House Museum (Kaleva), Saturdays in October, 12-4pm. 14551 Wuoksi St. The ghosts of early Kaleva families welcome you to see the Makinen Tackle Room, displays about notable citizens, and much more. Photographs

10) Material Girls Quilt Show (Wellston), Sat. Oct. 5, 10am-4pm. Norman Township Community Center (1273 S. Seaman Rd., south of M-55). A festive display of quilts! No strollers, please. $3 admission. (231) 848-4307

11) Douglas Valley Fall Festival (Manistee), Sat. Oct. 5, 12-5pm. (5375 Douglas Valley Dr., off Schoedel Rd.). U-pick pumpkin patch, GPS & kid-friendly scavenger hunts, cider and food. Featuring Levi the Donkey with tricks and rides. Live music 2-5pm. (231) 887-3333

12) Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin
(Manistee), Sat. Oct. 5, 12:55pm. Ramsdell
Theatre (101 Maple St.). The Metropolitan Opera comes to the Ramsdell screen, live in HD! Anna Netrebko and Mariusz Kwiecien star in the fateful romance that moves from farmhouse to ballroom to snowstorm. 14) Fiber Art, Ceramics & Photography
Show (Manistee), Oct. 11 (6:30-8:30pm),
Oct. 12 & 19 (1-9pm), Oct 13 & 20 (1-5pm),
Oct 15-17 (1-3pm) and Oct. 18 (5-9pm). Hardy
Hall, in the Ramsdell Complex (101 Maple St.)
Natural and synthetic materials, ceramics and
photography. Three media in one show, sure to

15) The Rocky Horror Show (Manistee), Oct. 11, 12, 18, 19 (7:30pm) plus Oct. 13 & 20 (2pm). Ramsdell Theatre (101 Maple St.).
The rude, raucous rock musical that became a movie and a decades-long, high-camp phenomenon is back where it's meant to be – live on stage! For mature audiences only.

16) Onekama Fall Festival (Onekama), Sat. Oct. 12, 10am-4pm at Onekama Village Park (Main St., on M-22). Craft and food vendors,
inflatable castle, wagon, pony and miniature train rides, face painting, Mr. Balloon Man and more! In case of rain, event will be held inside Onekama School. (231) 889-5680

17) Marilla Harvest Fest (Marilla), Sat. Oct. 12, 3-7pm at Marilla Museum & Pioneer Place
(9991 Marilla Rd). Hands-on activities, including splitting black ash for basketweaving, traditional music by the Baas Sisters, featuring
hammered dulcimer, recorder and violin. Fish boil and soup available. Donations accepted. (231) 362-3430

18) Hell's Belles (Manistee), Fri. Oct. 18, 9pm. Little River Casino Resort (US-31 & M-22). The one and only all-female AC/DC tribute act, with music from both eras of AC/DC. $15, $20, $25 at Little River gift shop or startickets.com. (866) 466-7338

19) Pumpkins & Haystacks Fall Festival (Arcadia), Sat. Oct. 19, 2-9pm. Pleasant Valley Community Center (M-22 & Glovers Lake Rd). The festival starts at 2pm, with kids' games, activities, hayrides until 5pm. Plus the bake-walk and silent auction! 20) Cemetery Walk (Manistee), Oct. 19, 20, 26 & 27, 4pm. Oak Grove Cemetery (1040 Veterans Oak Grove Dr.). Learn about Manistee County's rich history and the people who contributed to it. Walking tour lasts about one hour. $2. Proceeds go to Manistee Historical Museum and Oak Grove Cemetery. (231) 690-1570

21) Kids' Halloween Party (Manistee), Mon. Oct. 21, 6:30pm. Manistee County Library (95 Maple St.). Join us for Halloween stories, games, crafts, prizes, refreshments and a costume contest! All children are welcome. Free. (231) 723-2519

22) Haunted Library Tour (Manistee), Thurs. Oct. 24 & Fri. Oct. 25, 6-7:30pm. Manistee County Library (95 Maple St.). Drop by for a truly terrifying tour of the top floor. It will make you tremble! 3rd graders and up (younger if accompanied by a parent) Free. (231) 723-2519

23) Fear Forest (Filer Township), Fri. Oct. 25, 6-10pm. Filer Township Rec Center (28th St. and Oak Dr.). The hay ride returns with a brand new look, new route and new spooks! Geared for family fun. $3 per person. (231) 723-3138

24) Haunted Factory (Manistee), Oct. 25, 26 & Nov.1, 2 (8-11pm) and Oct. 27, 31 (8-10pm). Manistee PBX (77 Hancock St.). The factory returns for another year of terrifying twists and turns! $6, ages 8 and up. $3 for under-8 area including bounce houses, kid-friendly surprises and mini-haunt. (231) 723-2811

New Event - All Night Bowling for Kids (Manistee), Fri. Oct. 25, 9pm-7am.  Striketown Bowling (US-31).  Our overnight bowling party includes music, cosmic bowling and more!  Includes shoe rental, unlimited pop & popcorn.  Pizza available for $1 slice.  For children and teens up to age 18.  Adult supervision provided.  $20.  (248) 343-0722

New Event - Trick or Treating on River Street (Manistee), Sat. Oct 26, 3:30-5pm.  Trick or treats...or, well, watch your back!  You never know what's around that next turn!

26) Shostakovich's The Nose (Manistee), Sat. Oct. 26, 12:55pm. Ramsdell Theatre (101 Maple St.). The Metropolitan Opera comes to the Ramsdell screen, live in HD! Paulo Szot reprises his acclaimed performance of a bureaucrat in search of his missing nose. Based on Gogol’s comic story. 28) Halloween Fun for Young and Old (Manistee), Sat. Oct. 26, 1-4pm. At the Ramsdell Complex (101 Maple St.) An afternoon of pumpkin carving and mask making. 29) Filer Charter Township Halloween Parade (Filer Township), Thurs. Oct. 31, 5pm. 23rd & Nelson Sts. See ghouls, critters and costumed characters in this annual event! Parade starts on 23rd St., runs south on Nelson St. to the fire station. Candy and treats after the parade. Arrive by 4:30pm at 23rd St. to participate - all are welcome! 30) Trunk or Treat (Bear Lake), Thurs. Oct. 31, 5-8pm. Hopkins Park (downtown, directly off US-31). Decorated car trunks and trick or treating for the kids! In case of rain, event will be held inside Lions Club Den. Sponsored by

31) Trunk or Treat (Wellston), Thurs. Oct. 31, 6-7:30pm. Norman Township Community Center (1273 S. Seaman Rd., south of M-55). Cars park and hand out candy, plus costume parade, car decoration contest & food. Presented by the Wellston Boosters. (231) 510-2101

Brethren Fun Fall Fest (Sat. Oct. 5) to be Held Indoors

Rain is expected Saturday afternoon, so the fest is moving indoors.  The Dickson Township Hall is at 14270 Coates Highway (Marker B) in Brethren - just a hop, skip and a jump from the musuem (Marker A).  And yes, there will be favorite schoolyard games, as previously scheduled (can you teach one to others?).
